Defiance Marine Fishing Report

Westport Albacore Report

September 24, 2014

Albacore fishing off the Washington coast has been nothing short of epic. Defiance Marine Pro Staffer Tommy Donlin reports:

"Plugged the boat yesterday at 46.32 X 124.47. Never had to break out a troll rod. The chew was in full effect and three drifts on the spot was all it took. Total trip time from leaving the dock and coming back was 8 hours. And there is a really great grade of fish right now."

Mark Coleman of All Rivers and Saltwater Charters has been sending similar reports lately.

Late last week the Chinook and Coho fishing simply went through the roof out of Westport!

Before then the bite was decent nearshore but this offshore bite is world class. You're looking at a 20-25 mile run SW to the prime grounds (about 45 minutes in our Defiance Guadalupe's). There are still decent number of Chinook inshore so don't necessarily write that location off either. Plus the inshore bottom fishing had also been outstanding.

We're trolling fresh Herring or traditional Salmon spoons with down-riggers primarily. Of course we will run a few divers in the mix too and good action is coming on all gear types.

Full boat limits of Chinook and Coho have been the daily norm this week. The largest Chinook was just a shade over 30lbs and the Coho have been a nice grade too.

Good luck!

The chinook bite has been a little tricky this past week but every other day or so our boats have been getting into them. The inshore waters have finally cooled down thanks to some NW wind this week. The bottom fishing has been outstanding and if we have a good salmon day on top of it...the smiles have pretty big leaving the boats!

We have been trolling divers and whole herring for the chinook and jigging tandem shrimp fly setups on light spinning gear for the rockfish and lingcod.

Good luck!

All Rivers & Saltwater Fishing Report for Skykomish River

June 10, 2014

Our guides have been producing some fish out of the Skykomish this week. Mostly summer steelhead but a few chinook have been in the mix also.

This trip is a good one to try because you have a chance at two different species and the river is close to home for many. Well and not to mention our BBQ lunches!

The way to catch these guys is by side drifting salmon eggs. Both the steelhead and the chinook will readily take this set up.

Good luck!

All Rivers & Saltwater Fishing Report for Skykomish River

Westport Fishing at it's finest!

MA2 - Westport, WA

This Saturday marks the Chinook Salmon opener for Marine Area 2 (Westport). We're looking at a bumper run of chinook this Spring and Summer and a 7 day per week, 2 marked Chinook per Angler through mid June. Then we will be allowed to retain one Wild Chinook, and a Coho or two ongoing. Basically, this Spring and Summer are shaping up to be an Ocean Salmon fishery for the record books.

We have been and will continue to keep working the Ocean Lingcod and Rockfish hard all of May and June. Limits daily of 70-80 fish for 6 Anglers. Incredible fishing trip, hands down. Second to a trip trip . . . yes.

You can even catch all three . . . Salmon, Lingcod, and Rockfish on the same trip if you hustle!

For the Salmon we troll or mooch fresh Herring. We are usually in on the beach in water depths of 15-50 f.o.w. Downriggers or divers work great.

I'm willing to offer Salmon U and Steelhead U a discount for booking one of our Express Style Westport charters during the month of June . . . $150/pp (reg $195/pp) for Salmon or bottom fishing, or $225 to do both!!! We take just 6 Anglers per trip and we really, really move fast getting out to the prime grounds aboard our 29' Defiance Guadalupe's.

Good luck!

COLUMBIA SPRINGERS RIVER FINALE!

All Rivers & Saltwater Fishing Report
The mighty Columbia cranked out a lot of Spring Chinook this past week!

Monday, 4/14/14 was the last fishing day under the current rules but it will most likely re-open in May after run size updates. Keep an eye on that!

Until then, the Puget Sound has been producing some great Chinook fishing and we will be offering that fishery through the end of April. Most of our chinook limits are coming from the saltwater. Inquire for details!

Cowlitz Fishing Report

We're seeing steady Hatchery Steelhead Fishing and the occasional Springer in the mix too.

Side drifting with small yarnies or single EZ Eggs with a touch of yarn is your go to technique for the steelhead. You'll catch just about everything on that setup but if you want to target the Chinook more specifically, drag or back troll Salmon Eggs, or back troll and hover fish with herring.

Good luck!

Here is a recent report from a Defiance Marine Pro Staffer Tommy Donlin on the Westport late season tuna bite.

His report follows:

Words truly cannot describe the MAYHEM that is occurring right now off our coast. The tuna are practically, and in some cases LITERALLY (more on that later), jumping INTO the boat! It's a one bait stop game out there right now, meaning we headed out 30nm, found our first school of jumpers, set up shop, killed the motors, and drifted for 3-4 hours. The warm water migration is receding and the fishing pressure is vastly reduced, i.e. the fish are pooled up off our coast, you can see jumpers for mile and miles, and IT IS INSANE! Let me put it this way: it is the BEST TUNA BITE I have ever seen off our coast.

My boat: the Defiance Admiral 250EX coming in at 5000 lbs dry. By the end of the day on Saturday, we loaded her with somewhere in the neighborhood of 1800 to 1900 lbs of tuna, roughly 37% of the boat weight! And not one problem jumping up on plane and cruising in at 25-27knots! This trip gave me a new appreciation for my ride as we stuffed 4 kill bags, a 165 quart cooler, the insulated in floor fish boxes, and the bait tank with 85 (count 'em 8-5) tuna by 11:45AM! I couldn't have done it without having some top sticks on board:

  • Dave (Happy Daze)
  • Arvin (FlyinFish OTI)
  • Mark (Reel Nauti)
  • Andy

So here' how it all went down.
We headed down to WP on Friday and got settled in.

On our way out, at about 25nm, I started seeing mass amounts of birds cruising the skies. They weren't crashing the water, but they were definitely curious. I looked at my temp gauge and the water color and my distance from port and thought hell no...too cold, too dirty, too close...keep going. We went another three miles and I KID YOU NOT...a TUNA jumped about 5-10 feet right in front of the bow. Any closer and I WOULD HAVE HIT HIM! I started yelling JUMPERS, JUMPERS, JUMPERS!!!! My crew is like WTF! WHERE? I look up and 100 yards off the bow, bullets are blitzing the surface and the birds were going nuts. I pulled up wind and initiated the MASSACARE!

I put the boat in gear to clean up and move on to the next school. I had Arvin get his spinning rod and fling the swimbait out, we went 20 yards and WERE ON AGAIN! Except this time, a couple guys packed fish while a couple guys kept the school there. Arvin hit the bow with his iron, and we cleaned house on the back deck, AS IT JUST TOOK WFO to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Fish were on swimbaits, vertical jigs, surface iron, bait, and jack poles.

We stuffed fish everywhere we could: 4 Kill bags, 1 165qt cooler, in the insulated in floor fish holds, and 9 tuna even found there way into the bait tank!

We were done by 11:45AM, but it took us a while to clean up. I pointed the boat towards port and waited for the 'GOOD TO GO' call from the crew.
